Types of Shoulder Surgery
The right procedure depends on shoulder stability, bone strength, and muscle condition around the joint. Primary shoulder surgeries include:
Total Shoulder Replacement
The ball at the top of the arm bone and the socket are replaced with prosthetic components. Recommended when both parts are damaged.
Reverse Shoulder Replacement
The positions of the ball and socket are switched. A metal ball is attached to the shoulder blade and a new socket is placed on the arm bone, ideal when rotator cuff muscles are deficient.
Hemi Arthroplasty
Also known as partial shoulder replacement, only the ball portion is replaced while the existing socket remains intact.
Revision Shoulder Replacement
Performed when previous implants wear out or loosen. The old components are removed and new ones inserted, often requiring careful bone reconstruction.
Resurfacing Shoulder Surgery
Only the worn surface of the joint is capped with a prosthetic covering, preserving more natural bone.
